The Jammu and Kashmir government has given a notice to Punjab seeking Rs 8,500 crore in compensation for the losses incurred on sharing water and power generated from Ravi river.
“The government has sent a compensation notice seeking Rs 8,500 crore, including Rs 2,500 crore as a cost of sharing power, in compensation from Punjab,” Minister for Irrigation and Flood Control, Taj Mohi-ud-Din said on Thursday.
Mr. Taj, who addressed public rallies in Ramban district, said that the NC-Congress government has taken the step of completing Ravi canal and getting the State’s share of water and power from Punjab.
With the construction of remaining portion of the Ravi canal, more than 1.33 lakh hectares of agricultural land in Jammu province would be irrigated, he said.
This, he said, would help produce additional foodgrains of 2.66 lakh tones, benefiting a population of seven lakhs and converting Jammu and Kashmir from a food-deficit State into a food-surplus State.
