JALANDHAR: Punjab Youth Congress has “postponed” its programme of proposed demonstrations in Lok Sabha constituencies to protest against the honouring of Balwant Singh Rajoana, who was involved in conspiracy of Chief Minister Beant Singh’s assassination, by Akal Takht and SGPC on June 6.
PYC had announced to hold these demonstrations from June 20 at Amritsar in all the 13 parliamentary constituencies of Punjab.
PYC President Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary said that they took the decision of postponement on the directions received from Indian Youth Congress headquarters in Delhi. “This has been done keeping in view the agenda of the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) which will strongly be raising this issue in the ongoing Punjab Vidhan Sabha Session. A PYC delegation will also meet the Punjab Governor on this matter,” he said.
However sources revealed that actual reasons for this decision at the level of IYC head quarters were different because Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Captain Amarinder Singh had already announced to raise the issue in assembly PYC on June 6. The Captain made this announcement in presence of CLP leader Sunil Jakhar.
According to Youth Congress sources, its leaders have been advised not to have any independent programme on this sensitive issue and follow the programme designed by the parent programme.
It is learnt that intelligence agencies had alerted that trouble could be created by some elements at these demonstration which could then trigger a chain reaction. “If these demonstrations witness a conflict or some other trouble then the issue can get out of hands and can rather disturb the peace in state,” said a Congress leader.
“As of now Congress leaders want to adapt a calibrated approach as the over-shrill can be counter-productive and can result in alienating Sikhs if things would get out of hands with such demonstrations,” said a senior Congress leader.
