Sikh Youth Vancouver – Public meeting

The Sikh Youth Vancouver group are holding a public meeting on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 3.00 p.m at the Himalaya restaurant- (Main and 50th St, Vancouver to discuss a number of controversial issues.

The group who are still in litigation with existing Ross Street Temple administration say Sikh Youth Vancouver fought for a fair election process for the past 1½ years and are urging locals to get involved.

The SYV say criticism about the temples condition is still valid with repairs and upkeep at the Gurdwara is still pending after more than one year. Other issues they wish to discuss and seek input on are as follows:
The Komagata Maru payment negotiated with the Federal government. The SYV claim the payment is against the wishes of the Sangat and community as a whole.

Guru Nanak Elementary school shut down on the first day of school – Sept. 2011
Financial irregularities and financial documents which are being held by the temple administration which refuse to release them claiming “privileged information.”

Sikh Youth Vancouver proposes
• To address the long overdue Gurdwara repairs.
• Eliminate the $25 membership fee.
• Memberships to be available online (so that future litigation against corrupt executive committees can be avoided)
• To provide full financial disclosure. There is no such thing as “privileged information”.
• Nullify the current Komagata Maru agreement with the Federal govnerment and demand an apology from Parliament. (Any financial negotiations will be done with consultation from the Sangat)
• To put the issues of the past behind and bring the community together.
• To set an atmosphere where “our leaders” can no longer keep control with their “dirty politics” of division and hinder the community’s development.
• To deal with the issues of today & provide better programs.
• Our community is neither “moderate” nor “fundamental”.
In a press release the SYV stated, “We are Sikhs. Let’s all work together and remove the stigma of the past and create a better future for our kids.”
